The Bay of Pigs workshop, commemorating 65 years since the great victory against imperialism, an event framed within the activities for the anniversary of the epic battle and the centenary of the Commander-in-Chief, began this Tuesday at the Fidel Castro Ruz Center.
The opening ceremony was attended by Yuniasky Crespo Baquero, head of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, as well as other officials and leaders from this political organization, the State, the Government, the Union of Young Communists, the Ministry of the Interior, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces.
From the very first minutes of the meeting, there was unanimous agreement that holding this workshop, 65 years after that great feat, "is to reaffirm that the freedom won is defended every day" and that its example "continues to illuminate Cuba's path."
The opening lecture, Las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos y la invasión mercenaria de Playa Girón. La Base Naval en Guantánamo (The United States Armed Forces and the Mercenary Invasion of Playa Girón: The Naval Base at Guantánamo), was given by Dr. René González Barrios, director of the institution, who emphasized that, in that battle, which lasted approximately 66 hours, "two things came into play: the tactics employed and a combination of our experience in irregular warfare with elements of conventional warfare."
“Today we live in a global geopolitical context of realignment among hegemonic powers and the decline of U.S. imperialism. The results of the military aggression against Venezuela, with the kidnapping of the legitimate president of that sister nation, have awakened in the United States presidency the idea that any adventure in its backyard, including in Cuba, will have the same results. The 32 Cubans who fell gloriously in the line of internationalist duty showed the world how the sons of this land fight: with resolve, without fear, certain of final victory and the invincible power of ideas,” he added.
Following the screening of the ICAIC Latin American Newsreel Muerte al Invasor (Death to the Invader), a panel discussion took place in the La Plata multipurpose room, which included the following presentations: Antecedentes de la Operación Pluto (Background of Operation Pluto), by Andrés Zaldívar Diéguez, president of the Provincial Executive Committee of the Union of Historians of Cuba (UNHIC); La brigada mercenaria y el plan invaso (The Mercenary Brigade and the Invasion Plan), presented by Colonel Raidel Vargas Ortega, representing the Center for Military Studies of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR); and La lucha contra bandidos en abril de 1961 (The Fight Against Bandits in April 1961), presented by Pedro Etcheverry Vázquez, director of the Center for Historical Research of State Security.
Later, the book Playa Girón. A 65 años de aquel abril socialista (Bay of Pigs: 65 Years After That Socialist April), compiled by Elier Ramírez Cañedo, Deputy Head of the Ideological Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, was presented under the Ocean Sur imprint. The author stated that it is a work intended "primarily for young people, but which will be enjoyed by the general public" in its entirety. Integrating speeches by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, images, and a detailed chronology of the event, the book aims to serve "as motivation to continue researching and delving deeper, because there are still many avenues to explore. It is important to consider this history not as a talisman of the past, but as a force to mobilize and transform the present," Ramírez Cañedo concluded.
