On April 16, 1961, before a crowd inflamed with patriotism that was also bidding farewell to their children killed in the bombings of Cuban airports the previous day, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz declared the socialist nature of the Revolution. He thus charted a path that was as unyielding then as it is today, by the sovereign decision of the Cuban people.
"Comrades, workers and peasants, this is the socialist and democratic Revolution of the humble, with the humble, and for the humble. And for this Revolution of the humble, by the humble, and for the humble, we are willing to give our lives."
