The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, continued his exchanges this Thursday with the Municipal Defense Councils of Havana, which were activated in early May in response to the complex situation the country is experiencing under the severe effects of the intensified blockade imposed by the United States government and the oil embargo against the island, which has now lasted more than six months.
On this occasion, he visited Old Havana, Arroyo Naranjo, and La Lisa, accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee, and assessed issues such as water supply, energy generation, solid waste collection, and other basic services that have been severely affected.
During these exchanges—which began on June 30 and have already reached nine of the fifteen municipalities of the Cuban capital—the Head of State focused on the care of the most vulnerable people in the communities, emphasizing the importance of pension payments. He indicated that solutions would be sought and all mechanisms expedited so that those who have given everything for the country receive what is due to them on time and without difficulties.
In the three municipalities, he highlighted positive experiences—from both the state and non-state sectors, and the collaboration between them—that should be urgently implemented in areas such as garbage collection, assistance to vulnerable populations, and pension payments, among others.
He also expressed interest in the work of the Community Youth Network in the three districts, an innovative initiative that has allowed young Cubans to become involved in solving the problems of their communities.
He was briefed on the sports, cultural, and health promotion activities that have taken place; on the young people's outreach to elderly people living alone, to vulnerable families, and to young people who are neither studying nor working; as well as on the monitoring of the Family Assistance System (SAF), which provides food to those most in need.
Díaz-Canel also inquired about the attention given to the population's demands, spoke about the sensitivity with which these issues should be handled, and reflected on the importance of maintaining order and public safety in all communities.
The Head of State acknowledged the organization of the work in the municipalities and called for continued optimism in facing the difficult situation the country is experiencing, confident of victory.
