A fire in young hands descended from the steps of the University of Havana last night.
As in all of Cuba, numerous torches guarded the flame of José Martí among different generations, but united in the tribute to a man of all times.
Protected by the universality of the Apostle, flags of friendly countries paraded, and a group of foreign companions heard a claim that is like the whole world: Free Palestine! The clamor was a certainty: all just causes are a Martí cause. As he intuited, "life is double"; even infinite, for beings like him.
The tribute was presided over by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution -exceptional witness of that first March of the Torches that, in 1953, did not let Martí die "in the year of his centenary"-; by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez; and by members of the Political Bureau Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People's Power; Roberto Morales Ojeda, Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee; José Amado Ricardo Guerra, Secretary of the Council of Ministers, and by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, among other officials.
The president of the Federation of University Students, Ricardo Rodríguez González highlighted the relevance of Fidel's words, when he evoked the Master: "Today more than ever we need his thoughts, (...) his ideas".
José Martí is a terrible danger for the hegemonic intentions of colonizing our sovereignty and self-determination; that is why our enemies try to hide him and change the color of his purity, unable to understand his attraction, he said.
Rodríguez González called for the usefulness of virtue in the daily battles, he called to assume "the great epic of the daily, of the simple duty and of greater glory with the Homeland from the smallest task". He assured that only tireless work for the nation and its people is honorable.
The young tide that lit up yesterday night all over Cuba, with a Martí's light, was also accompanied in Havana by the Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, and the Commander of the Rebel Army, José Ramón Machado Ventura, also a participant of that founding march of this revolutionary tradition.
