"Honor and glory to our heroes. Fatherland or Death! We shall overcome! Always onward to victory!" These words were written on Tuesday afternoon in the Book of Condolences in Tribute to the heroes and martyrs of Venezuela and Cuba who gave their lives in defense of the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
They were written by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, in the pages prepared since January 9 at the Venezuelan Embassy in Havana.
Until Tuesday, authorities from the largest of the Antilles, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the island, and the people came to the book to express their feelings.
Accompanied by other leaders of the Revolution, the Cuban President entered the room where the Book of Condolences was located and began his message by saying: "To the brave people of Venezuela: The Cuban people are deeply saddened and outraged by the vile and criminal attack on sister Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and his wife Cilia Flores."
The dignitary stated in his own words: "We express our genuine and heartfelt condolences and revolutionary tribute to the women and men of Venezuela, and to the 32 Cuban combatants who gave their lives in defense of Venezuela, in defense of Cuba, in defense of Latin America and the Caribbean."
"In the face of threats from the Yankee empire," the head of state emphasized, "we reaffirm our loyalty to the legacy of our heroes, Fidel and Chávez."
It was a moment in which other senior Cuban leaders—members of the Political Bureau—also expressed the feelings of brotherhood that unite the two nations. Thus, the president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernández; the prime minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz; the Secretary of Organization of the Party's Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda; and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, wrote in the Book of Condolences.
The tribute was also attended by Emilio Lozada García, member of the Central Committee and head of its Department of International Relations, as well as Orlando Maneiro Gaspar, Venezuelan ambassador to Cuba.
