Las Tunas – The Las Tunas Tobacco Collection, Processing, and Rolling Company (ABTT in Spanish) generates almost 60 kilowatts of energy through the use of photovoltaic panels at its factories, which supply tobacco for domestic consumption and for export.
For several years, the use of renewable energy sources has been part of the entity's strategic plan; some units were even purchased, but then the scarce sources of foreign currency income put a stop to that intention.
Due to the unreliable power supply, work stoppages were frequent in the workshops, consequently impacting production, which amounted to more than 400,000 cigars of export quality and nearly 1.5 million units destined for sale in the domestic market. In terms of revenue, the losses exceeded 26 million pesos annually.
Faced with this complex reality, the Tabacuba Business Group decided to undertake a large-scale energy transition in its main processes. In Las Tunas, this began with the Vidal Navas and Maniabón factories in Puerto Padre, with the goal of contributing to exports.
They also installed photovoltaic systems in some workshops of the Enrique Casals factory, in the municipality of Las Tunas, where tobacco is also made for sale abroad.
Following this initial experience, the Lázaro Peña plant in Jobabo, which supplies domestic consumers, is launching two solar panel modules of six kilowatts each today to change its energy matrix and maintain its excellent production results.
According to Carlos Betancourt Almaguer, Development Director at ABTT, other photovoltaic systems will be gradually installed in the remaining workshops in this city. He added that the contracting process for the other units in the Las Tunas province, including a sorting center and the distribution warehouse, is underway.
The manager said these improvements will allow production to recover and that the work environment has been transformed, as workers now come to the facilities confident that they will be able to work. Previously, when the power went out, they had to go home, which affected their wages.
In the agricultural sector, he pointed out, work was done jointly with the Agricultural Projects Company and the Ministry of Agriculture for the construction of 18 seedling houses on the farms of nine producers, in which photovoltaic systems will also be used for irrigation.
This will ensure the planting position is at the optimal time and will favor an improvement in yields, in addition to providing security to the campaign program, he concluded.
The transformation in various areas of the tobacco sector could be the beginning of the recovery of the activity in the province, where production dates back to the 18th century.
In 1993, tobacco cultivation was revived, experiencing rapid growth that placed the region among the best in the country, with excellent results in 2017 when 1,276 tons of raw tobacco were harvested. However, a significant decline followed, and currently, production barely exceeds one hundred tons.
