China will resolutely take countermeasures if the United States approves new tariffs

BEIJING.- China called the U.S. threat to raise tariffs on the Asian nation's products as one mistake after another and said it “will fight to the end if the U.S. side insists on going down the wrong path.”
This transcended in statements by a spokesman for the Ministry of Commerce, published Tuesday, which reaffirms the opposition to the measures of the U.S. administration, which “are groundless and constitute a typical practice of unilateral intimidation”.
The message urges the U.S. to cancel all unilateral tariff measures and properly resolve differences with China through equal dialogue on the basis of mutual respect.
On Monday, President Trump threatened to impose new tariffs of 50% on products from the Asian giant. The decision would come into effect as of April 9 if China does not withdraw the additional 34% levies, announced last week in response to the U.S. government's recent measures.
In the same message, the U.S. president stated that he would terminate talks with the Asian nation, prioritizing negotiations with other countries.
If his current threats are carried out, Chinese products could face total tariffs of 104%.
THERE ARE NO WINNERS IN TRADE WARS OR TARIFF WARS
The Government of the Asian nation released last Saturday a statement with its official position on the U.S. measures, which it described as “tariff abuses” and a typical act of “unilateralism, protectionism and economic intimidation”.
The statement said the U.S. employs the levies to “disrupt the existing international economic and trade order, prioritizing U.S. interests over the global common good and sacrificing the legitimate interests of countries around the world to serve its own hegemonic agenda.”
“China has taken and will continue to take resolute measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security and development interests,” the message pointed out.
Taking into account its role as the second largest economy and second largest consumer goods market, the Asian giant will continue to open up to the world, “regardless of developments in the international situation.”
Among the actions enunciated to achieve this purpose, the institutional opening in terms of norms, regulations, management and standards are included. In addition, it will implement policies to facilitate high-level trade and investment, as well as the promotion of a “first-class” business environment.
The importance of multilateralism was also noted, calling for respect for mechanisms such as broad consultations, joint contributions and benefit-sharing.
There are no winners in trade wars or tariff wars and protectionism leads to a dead end, the communiqué emphasized.
