Life imprisonment sentenced to terrorist who assaulted police officer in Camaguey

Osvaldo Fernández Pichardo received a life sentence in the First Chamber of the Camaguey Provincial People's Court for the crimes of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons or explosives.
During the public hearing for case number 6 of 2025, it was demonstrated that Fernández Pichardo, a person residing in the United States with extensive activism against the Cuban Revolution, was offered $600 to assault a member of the National Revolutionary Police in a public place, thereby instilling fear, disrupting public order, and fostering feelings of insecurity among the population.
According to the NTV report, images released on May 29th of last year showed the defendant, taking advantage of his physical build, attacking an unarmed, uniformed police officer from behind with a knife as she walked along República Street in the city of Camaguey.
The injuries inflicted placed the officer's life in imminent danger and required medical treatment. As additional penalties, the sanctioned individual was deprived of his public rights, had objects and property related to the incident confiscated, and was prohibited from obtaining a passport and leaving the country.
He was also ordered to compensate the Ministry of the Interior officer for the damages caused. During the proceedings and the oral trial, all procedural guarantees and due process rights enshrined in the Criminal Procedure Law and the Constitution of the Republic were observed.
The National Revolutionary Police officers are responsible for guaranteeing public order and citizen tranquility. Therefore, this criminal act was widely condemned when it came to light, and now, in the name of the people, the courts have imposed an exceptional, rigorous, and proportionate punishment commensurate with its severity.
