Decree issued yesterday by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, an Official Mourning is in force today in Cuba, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight.
"With deep consternation our people learned that thirteen brave and self-sacrificing soldiers, with an exemplary conduct during their service, died in an attempt to extinguish a fire in a building site that stored war material of the Holguín Military Region, in the Eastern Army, at the imminent risk of their own lives, to prevent the occurrence of a catastrophe".
This is how the Head of State based his decision, by means of Presidential Decree 956, contained in the Official Gazette of the Republic, in its extraordinary edition No. 1 of 2025, "as a just tribute to the thirteen soldiers who fell in the line of duty".
It is hereby provided that, during the period of the Official Mourning, the Lone Star flag will be hoisted at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
As is well known, in the early morning of January 7, an accident occurred at the aforementioned construction site.
Investigations determined that the possible cause was associated with an electrical failure caused by a short circuit inside the facility. In a communiqué, the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces explained that, due to the extreme complexity of the terrain, due to the explosions, the effects of the accumulated gases and the severe damage caused, as well as the real danger of landslides, due to the structural affectation of the construction site, the accident site is inaccessible and, consequently, there is no possibility of life at the site.
Today, at nine o'clock in the morning, in the Revolution Square of General Calixto García, in the city of Holguín, a ceremony of posthumous homage to the combatants will be held.
