On the chest of Mijaín López Núñez, Gladys Bejerano Portela and Omara Durand Elías, Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, placed on Tuesday the decorations that accredit them with the honorary titles of Hero of the Republic of Cuba and Heroines of Labor.
In the act of recognition, headed by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, and by other members of the Political Bureau, a just tribute was paid to these “three revolutionaries of proven conduct, who through their dedication, devotion and passion for what they do, have put the name of Cuba on high.”
Of Mijaín, five-time Olympic champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, spoke the member of the Political Bureau and Vice President of the Republic, Salvador Valdés Mesa, who highlighted his exceptional results in sports and, above all, his commitment to his people, to Fidel, Raúl and the Revolution, of which he is the fruit.
In his opinion, “it would be enough to review his beautiful record to recognize in Mijaín one of the greatest athletes of all times.”
The words of praise for Gladys and Omara came from Political Bureau member and general secretary of the Workers' Central Union of Cuba, Ulises Guilarte de Nacimiento.
The former has headed the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic for the last 15 years; the latter is the undisputed queen, for more than a decade, of the international Paralympic movement.
About Gladys Bejerano, it was reported that “she is one of the most vivid expressions that discipline and rigor in work, as well as loyalty to the Revolution, are essential attributes to defend the socialist society we are building.”
More than winning medals in 100, 200 and 400 meters on a track, stressed Guilarte de Nacimiento, the most captivating thing about Omara has been her simplicity, her fidelity, and her love for her family and Cuba, of which she is today a symbol of dedication and sacrifice.
The emotional ceremony culminated with the salute of the General of the Army and the other attendees to the family members gathered there, essential guards so that everyone can continue to reap success, in the name of the Homeland that honors them.
