The use of pre-exposure prophylaxis provides effective protection against HIV.
The Cuban Health System implements the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), as a high-impact method in the prevention of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), a service that is available free of charge in 36 polyclinics and seven community spaces in all provinces of the country. This was announced by Manuel Romero Placeres, head of the National Program for the Control and Prevention of HIV and Hepatitis of the Ministry of Public Health, during the launching of the campaign "Follow your rhythm. PrEP, an effective option to prevent HIV", held at the Nguyen Van Troi polyclinic in Centro Habana. The insertion of this preventive method constitutes an innovative and very effective alternative, since the treatment consists in taking antiretroviral drugs that reduce the probabilities of infection by more than 90%.Yoire Ferrer, deputy director of Prosalud and head of the National Prevention Center, stressed to Granma that having this alternative, in the midst of the lack of condoms - the most effective method to prevent sexually transmitted infections, including HIV - is an opportunity to gain in health, especially for the populations most vulnerable to contracting the virus.PrEP was introduced in Cuba since 2019, as part of a pilot project in Cárdenas and Matanzas, after which it was decided to extend its use to other territories. This is a campaign born from the alliance between Minsap, civil society networks, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
