Since September 9, and for the first time in Cuba, an anti-pneumococcal vaccine that protects against the ten most widely circulating serotypes that cause invasive pneumococcal disease began to be applied.It is the immunogen Pneumosil 10 valente, prequalified by the World Health Organization (who) in January 2020, which protects against serotypes 1, 5, 6a, 6b, 7f, 9v, 14, 19a, 19f and 23f of the pneumococcal bacteria.The more than 27,500 children to be vaccinated throughout the country will be protected against the Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, also known as pneumococcus, which causes serious invasive diseases such as acute meningitis, pneumonia and sepsis.As explained recently by Dr. Francisco Durán García, National Director of Epidemiology of Minsap, the action is aimed at children born up to June 30, 2024, and those born in July, who reach two months of age.He added that boys and girls will receive a first dose, a second one after two months, and a third booster dose after seven months.Durán García said that, for next year, children under two years of age will also be immunized with the Cuban vaccine Quimi-Vio, once all the batches are available to vaccinate this population. Regarding the flu vaccine, he said that it has already been administered to the pediatric population and now it is being administered to adults, essentially in the risk groups.
